Rajasthan is presently the biggest state in India and is known as the land of brave warriors. It’s a state full of colors and festivals.People from Rajasthan migrate to different parts of India for the purpose of business, work, education etc and during their stay outside Rajasthan they encounter various myths about Rajasthan that are prevalent in the rest of India or I should say “World “. Those myths are clarified here with reasons.
1. You are a ” Marwadi” by default
“Tu pakka marwadi hai!”
You are assumed to be a marwadi if you are from Rajasthan.
People should hold a pen in their hand and note this down – “Everyone who belongs to Rajasthan is not a “Marwari”. Marwaris are Indian ethnic group of traders whose origin is from Marwar region. The Marwar region includes Barmer, Jalore, Lakshmannagar, Nagore, Jodhpur, and Pali. If someone has an origin from above-mentioned districts then he can be addressed as Marwadi apart from Marwad there are other regions also in Rajasthan as Mewar, Shekhawati, godwar, bagad etc”.
2. Whole Rajasthan is not a Desert!

Badi Lake in Rajasthan
” Do you travel on camels there?”
Have you come across some extremely funny questions?
Rajasthan is being perceived as a dry rural place covered with desert with people in dhoti and pagdi with their sheep and camel. Thanks to Bollywood for this kind of positioning.
Please note down ” Only the nothwestern portion of Rajasthan is dry and covered with thar desert. There is descent greenery in other parts and one of the city “Udaipur” is known for its greenery and lakes it is known as the city of lakes and Venice of the east which claimed the title of most beautiful city of the world in 2009. Jaipur, on the other hand, a metropolitan city with all the happening lifestyle, Kota is the education hub of India likewise every place has its own specialty and they are not rural .”
Hill station in Rajasthan…
Wondering??
Yess! Rajasthan too has a hill-station and after looking down from there you would get to see greenery too not sand dunes. The place is “Mount Abu” do visit it 🙂
3.Everyone is not a Rajput or a descendant of Rajput Royal Family
Yes! it is the land of brave Rajput rulers but everyone who is from Rajasthan is not a Rajput and don’t have any connections with the Royal family. Many people just want to connect you to the Royal family and you like it too.
“Banna” if this term is known to people please don’t use it for every Rajasthani ,it is used for Rajputs !
4. Daal -Baati -Churma
Yes! Daal Baati Churma is the specialty of Rajasthan but it’s not the basic food. It’s not consumed everyday. The basic food is the normal chapati , parantha, rice, vegetables and every fast food.
5. It rains here AS WELL!

A Picture clicked in Udaipur during Monsoon-Img Src Udaipurbeats
In Rajasthan the monsoon is same as other states. There is no scarcity of rain and fear of drought every year.
6. Liquor and Non- Veg
“In Rajasthan people generally don’t consume liquor and are pure vegetarian”- If you have heard this please note it’s not like that at all. The consumption of liquor and non- veg is as good as in other states. Barring few communities(Jain, Brahmins) everyone consumes them.
7. Attires
The attires that are portrayed in the daily soaps are not the attire that Rajasthanis wear. In the most backward villages the old age people could be seen wearing the traditional dhoti, pagdi but generally, the attires are normal.
8. Local Language

Pic Src-Udaipurbeats
All Rajasthanis can’t speak Rajasthani!
Please note Rajasthani language is generally synonym of Marwari language but this language is not spoken in whole Rajasthan, there are other regional languages spoken in other parts like Mewari in Mewar, Bagdi in Bagad etc and the languages differs with each other.
There are situation faced most of the times when your friends demand:-
” Just speak something in Rajasthani” or ” Sing a Rajasthani song”
and most of the times either the demands are denied or you end up saying
” Khamma Ghani Hokam!”
Please note As the local language is usually spoken in rural and semi-rural areas as their day to day language but if you ask a Rajasthani from the urban area he won’t be able to speak as Hindi is the language of the day to day communication and this “Khamma Ghani” is commonly not used.
9. Udaipur-Jaipur is not that near

Udaipur, Img Src-Udaipurbeats
Your friends keep confusing your place,
“You are from Jaipur na?”
You”No! it’s Udaipur”
“Arey kya farq padta pas hi to hai”
Just because the name rhymes well it doesn’t mean the two places are near. Jaipur is approx 500 km from Udaipur and a more interesting fact is Ahmedabad is at half the distance from Udaipur.
10. Rajasthani’s don’t prefer sweet in every cuisine
People sometimes relate Gujrat to Rajasthan. Rajasthanis don’t prefer sweet in every cuisine at all, they prefer spicy food.
11. Kaliyo Kud padio mela mai
This song is world famous but this is not the only kalbeliya song in Rajasthan as this song is played everywhere every time. There are many other songs also. Rajasthani people should now stop playing this song and introduce another.
12. Not everyone has seen the Desert

Desert in Pushkar-Img Src Udaipurbeats
“Desert all around your home, how cool it would look?”
You cannot expect every Rajasthani to have seen the desert. People generally assume that the desert which is shown in the movies would definitely be seen by every Rajasthani but the fact is very few Rajasthanis have seen the desert as the desert is mainly in the districts of Barmer, Jaisalmer and Bikaner so due to large geography of the state these places are very far for the people to reach obviously people living nearby only would have seen it.

Extremely true… My friends think the same that I am Marwadi by default and Eat Dal-Baati-Churma Regular…..
Same way evey one who lives in haridwar dont take dip in ganga every single day.
Chambal flows through kota the fact most of other people wont understand.
This all are Bollywood Myths some more are as;
south Indian dont daily eat dosas and sambhar and all of them don’t wear lungi and all are not dark in complexion and all south Indians are not madrasis,
Bengolis dont eat rice and fish curry just like daily there are other foods too,
Gujarati food is not always sweet ,
north east people don’t eat reptiles and other insects ,
Punjab is not full of sardars there are other ethinic groups too,
and many more…
We (indian) have so much of diversities within our self that we too dont know …
Am from Banswara rajasthjan and i agree with each n everything mentioned love rajasthaan and miss too.
Now that was really required!! I too have been questioned for many of the above mentioned points many times. Thank You for this post 🙂
I love Rajasthan…I was there for about four years, and I completely agree to what you have said about it…:)
I am born and brought up i n Kota, rajasthan and yes i have never seen desert and all the points mentioned are very true.

Someone finally said… Thank you
i am from kota rajasthan and all the myths r true.
Totally agree….m from Rajasthan .but i belong to a punjabi family so mostly i speak punjabi ..and the people get surprised in college n ask “how can you speak punjabi so well , you are from Rajasthan na.” …..
I am from jaipur rajasthan and fully agree with your note and this is great work done by you and feel us to proud a rajasthani.
I really like this information as I am from Rajasthan it should be published I. News paper Tourism brochure etc it’s just my idea .
I am fromJodhpur and would like to add one comment to the above
We rajasthanis have a very respectful and sweet dialect in our regional languages also.
they may sound different but one thing that is respect for elders and love is always felt
“Banna” if this term is known to people please don’t use it for every Rajasthani ,it is used for Rajputs !
this is good one
Agreed with all above points ….. and all the points are slap on the face of people who think Rajasthan is just Desert … I M Rajasthani and I proud to be ..
Guys dont take it on yourself. But this is how our media portrays your state to any one from a different state. its not us …. its whats been shown to us that we say 🙂
Peace
I am from Jaipur , I have just visited desert once in holidays, I am a punjabi , I can not at all speak Rajasthani , we don’t prepare daal baati churma at home regularly, we eat spicy food and we wear normal clothes not dhoti and all.
yes this is true
1. the people who r from jodhpur barmer and jaisalmer area a only marwadie.
rest of rajasthan includes mewad that is udaipur chittorgarh area, shekhawati -sikar, pilani jhunjhunu etc, hadoti- kota bundi, jhalawad etc, bikana-bikaner .
2. only marwad area that is barmer jaisalmer and jodhpur is desert other area like kota is very much green because of on of the biggest river Chambal(this is famous in movies by chambal Dakoos ), udaipur is well known for great lakes .
3. here we have many casts like rajput , jat, bhrahmin baniya, mali , meghwal jain muslim, rebari, banjara – kalbeliya, gurjar, meena, bhil-mina who have equal contribution in our culture .
4. we Eat dal bati and choorma on occasion and we very much like it but usually we prefer chapati with green vegetables and rice also.
these myths are created by our Bollywood movies so don’t take it seriously.
I like your post explain for cast system.
Perfect! 😀 :’)
They may be the myths but rajasthan’s fame is due to these. Pls take pride in mentioning these wherever u go.
Not agree with 5th one.
there was a time when people dosen’t know the meaning of rain.
Teachers teaches about rain by using “charni” and water….the drop drop comes from hole and drop to the ground …that called as rain.
Soon as per climatical changes…now mansoon on time.
Point no. 7, In the most ‘backward’ villages the old age people could be seen wearing the traditional dhoti ,pagdi but generally the attires are normal.
What does this point try to indicate? People wearing traditional attire are backward?
Backward in terms of development, fashion sense 🙂 and do you think we the new generation or people residing in urban area would wear dhoti and pagdi everyday , they wear it occasionally. Here am talking about the people who wear it daily.
truly agree…i belong from jaipur….it is a world beautiful place ever i have seen….it is part of my life.. i breath it…feel it and olways dream for this city <3 <3
love to be part of Rajasthan.
realyy it’s awsm…..totlyy agree wid above above discription……. suprbb
Nice one..I think this has happened with each n every rajasthani ..n happened with me as well..”rajasthani me much bol kar dikhana”, “are u a Marwari”…lolzzz
Very true
I came to Baroda in 1985.
I face the similar situation.
While looking at me probably they used to visualize that I have a Stick in my hand, Turban on my head, Camel beside me and standing in a desert.
It is mostly because of Films earlier and now TV Serials.
You have nicely presented this.
Very true in nature. And I hate the song, Kaliyo kud paro mela main. Everyone wants to hear that song.
Very true
one of the most idiot place i’d ever seen in my life …one is here only for just a single reson of co.plete studies or ….they never gonna come bak in kota …is the what average students are thinking not that that shit mentioned above
